Pros
- All of your files are offline markdown (.md) files so you back then up and sync them how you sync and back up the rest of your files.
- Completely FREE unless you want to sync your files or publish your files using Obsidian’s servers. Those are optional addons.
- Obsidian Sync is End-to-End Encrypted.
- Relies heavily on plugins. This can be a good thing or a bad thing so I have it listed as a pro and con.
- Bi-directional linking which means you can link together 2 notes to access your notes in a different way (rather than searching).
- You can combine tasks with your notes to see everything in one place.
Cons
- Only able to use Apple Pencil/Stylus Handwriting/drawing using a plugin like Excalidraw or Handwritten Notes.
- No built-in web clipper. You can use MarkDownload or another extension but nothing is built-in to Obsidian.
- Requires more coding knowledge than something like OneNote or Evernote or most other note-taking apps.
- Syncing requires knowledge of GitHub or using a 3rd party app or paying $48/year minimum for their sync solution.
- No collaboration. If you collaborate, you can use Obsidian Sync to collaborate but it is convoluted and difficult to get set up.
- No web app. Since this works with local files and Obsidian is built with privacy first, there is no web app.
- No PDF Scanning or Annotation built in. You can embed PDFs but you can’t annotate or scan them.
- Customer support is limited. The team is small so they can only handle so much each day. Due to this support isn’t quick. You can get faster support from their forum, discord server or subreddit but that requires you to have some kind of social media account.
- Relies heavily on plugins. This can be a good thing or a bad thing so I have it listed as a pro and con.
- No OCR built-in. You can get this functionality with plugins but isn’t built in. Also, the OCR you get from plugins does not include handwriting support. As a dev, I attempted to add this but it is a python black hole.
- No notifications from Obsidian means that while you can manage your tasks you can’t combine your notes with your reminders to keep them all in one app unless you keep Obsidian open 24/7 and look at it every 20 minutes or so.
